Recently, with videography, RED camera did a big shake up with their cinema camera lineup. They have effectively broken their lineup into two categories: camera  bodies and camera sensors. 

First, let’s check out the camera bodies:

RED currently features three mainline camera bodies:

  1. Komodo – small, fine-tuned for lightweight use.
  2. DSMC2 – medium, fine-tuned for modularity.
  3. Ranger – large, fine-tuned for film production.

Now, let’s check out the camera sensors:

RED currently features four mainline sensors:

  1. Gemini 5K S35 – designed for low light shooting conditions.
  2. Komodo 6K S35 (fixed sensor) – global shutter; image preview compatibility on RED app. 
  3. Helium 8K S35 – great for long-distance shoots.
  4. Monstro 8K VV – shallow depth of field, background compression, lens compatibility.

It’s worth noting that the Komodo 6K S35 is a fixed unit; so as to say that its body and sensor cannot be changed.

Whats so special about the red camera?

A RED camera shoots RAW footage files, which are file formats for uncompressed images that are large in size with loss less quality. This file format stores the fullest details of images so that they can be edited to your taste and preference.

There are atleast 10 different types of RED cameras. these would be perfect for any videography for a video production or something.

I happen to think it’s a pretty cool looking camera.
